A simple question. If someone offer you a BMW car a Laptop, which one will you choose? Obviously the BMW right? But one student from Rajasthan did choose a laptop over a BMW. Tanmay Shekhawat, an IIT topper from Rajasthan, rejected a BMW his coaching class gifted him for topping the class!
Tanmaya Shekhawat secured the 11th position in the IIT Entrance examination. As a gift, his coaching institute presented a BMW car. However, he rejected the offer.
Reason? According to him the car is too high-maintenance. If he decides to keep the car, he will have to pay 33% of the price as tax which comes to around Rs 9 lakhs. Coaching institute will not pay for the tax and Tanmay can’t afford it either. Plus, if he decides to service the car, he will have to shell out Rs 85 k, which again, is an extravagant amount.
Keeping this in mind, Tanmay’s family asked the coaching institute to take back the car.
“I asked the institute director to sell the car and give us the money, or keep the car and gift something else to my son, even a laptop,” said Tanmaya’s father Rajeshwar Singh Shekhawat.
However, the class had a different story to tell. “Earlier they wanted to keep it. They said the boy’s maternal uncle in Mumbai could keep it. Now they want to sell it as they need money for the treatment of the boy’s mother, who is a kidney patient,” the institute director told
Tanmaya joined IIT Bombay for a degree in computer engineering.
